It is strongly recommended that those using JPEGView 0.9 upgrade to this new version, as it provides much cleaner handling of PICT creation and JFIF extraction. Changes from Version 0.9: - Cleaner handling of JPEG identification and PICT-to-JFIF conversion - Now supports offscreen bitmaps for fast window updates (if enough memory is available) - Zooming, cropping, and picture rescaling options - Ability to view pictures in full screen mode (sans menubar) - Support for loading non-JPEG PICT files and for compressing uncompressed PICTs - Statistics window showing memory and image information - Explicit support for multiple-monitor systems - Can now be used for saving and opening compressed PICT0 resources - Allows the creation of thumbnail images for JFIF files - Support for Balloon Help and an improved Help interface Important Features of JPEGView: - It's free, simple, and easy to use - Requires only 512k to open most pictures and can open multiple pictures - "Smart" picture loading does not rely on file types - Automatically scales pictures to fit on screen - Creates and allows viewing of preview images - System 7 friendliness, including AppleEvents and 32-bit cleanliness - Extensive on-line documentation and Balloon Help - Two "Drag and Drop" applications for fixing file types - Cool ray-traced demonstration picture IMPORTANT NOTE: JPEGView *requires* both System 7.0 and QuickTime to run! Both versions (1.2 and 1.2m) of this program support all combinations of large, small, color, and monochrome displays. They are compatible with systems 6, 7, A/UX, and support all Macs from the Mac Plus up. It's a flexible capture utility which allows you to save to disk any text written to the Mac screen. Buttons allow you to toggle on or off the saving of text written by DrawText, DrawJust, DrawString, and DrawChar commands. Don't confuse this with usual capture utilities which save a screen at a time. You can set this control panel running and capture a whole session of communication with a mainframe, for example, without having to copy and paste each screen. You can also capture help files from programs that do not allow them to be printed or selected for copy/paste. I have one fancy program for IBM 3278 emulation while connected with a mainframe. My name is Ellen Ricca, a lowly clerk in the Information Technologies dept. of a community college. Because I happen to know a little bit about lots of computer-type stuff (hows that for technical jargon :-) ) my new boss (the director of I.T.) seems to think I am an *expert* (his term). I would say that I do know more than the average clerk but a heck of alot less than your average system manager. Well in any case, his latest inquiry of me has prompted me to post to you'all (only my second time). There are huge gaps in details here but try as I might I couldn't get him to give me many, so please bear with me if this sounds twisted and vague. I have already searched and searched the various reference material here (MacWorld, MacUser, PC World) and have yet to find a satisfactory answer. O.K., here's the situation. We have a Publications Dept. here that uses a Macintosh Ci and Si to produce catalogs, school logo and the like. There software includes Illustrator, Freehand, Quark X-press, Word 5.0. We also have a Facilities Mgt. dept that wants to produce roadsigns, building signs, office signs etc.. whenever they need one. The facilites dept has an IBM 486s that they use for other un-related applications. In the past Facilities has always "contracted out" to have signs made, now they want it done in-house so that there is a more uniform look, cost control, and turnaround time. O.K, here comes a question (I think!)... What graphic file format will transfer (translate?) from a mac platform to a dos platform and vice-versa with as little effort as possible? What I *think* he (they?) want to happen is for the graphic artist in Publications to send Facilities a logo, or a map design on disk, they then pop it into their IBM486 and are able to open it instantaneosly in "X" name graphics program and/or "Y" name word processing program (to add text to it). I don't even know what output device it will be printed on or if that even matters at this point (I heard mention of some sort of vinyl sheet printer -- who knows!). Do they just need the same software on both platforms, i.e., Illustrator and Word on the MAC and Illustrator and Word on the PC? Would they still need some sort of "file translator" on the receiving end? What if they should end up with completely different applications, i.e, Illustrator and Word on the MAC and lets say CorelDraw and WordPerfect on the PC? How could they seamlessly transfer then? Or is that impossible? Now I know the text can always go ASCII to ASCII, but what about all those different graphics formats (PICT, EPS, TIFF, etc..)? I know this is a long and obtuse post, but I hope someone out there can understand what I'm trying to ask, even if the only answer is that there is no answer. Thanks...... For those of you who have been complaining about Words lack of support needed for technical writing let me say that Framemaker is your answer if you have a Postscript printer. It allows you to do have references anyway you want. It can keep track of numbered tables, equations, footnotes following almost any numbering scheme (by document, chapter, section, etc. They will renumber as needed. Frame will keep track of these over multiple files if you need to split up your file. It has a nice framemath similar to MathType or Expressionis t. It does tables (with style-like sheets). If you take your old FPU (MC68881) and exchange it with a newer one (MC688882 same as the IIx) you will have the faster speed. Although both units are clocked at 16Mhz the 882 works faster. By doing this FPU and the FDHD upgrade you virtualy convert your MacII to a IIx. As far as fast memory chips, MacII's have a wait state for the processor. This means that anything faster than 120 simms is an overkill or waste. The latter models IIx and IIfx have the 68030 processors which include a cache ram. A lot of people are complaining about the approximately $1,500 upgrade price. Sorry, but I don't have any pity. I bought a Mac II, only to see the 68030 Mac IIx released shortly after. I upgraded for about $2,000 to the IIx. Now, with its slow processor and limited memory capabilities, I'd like to upgrade again. What does Apple offer people like me? An upgrade to the IIfx for another $2,000? Sorry, but I don't really want to buy all those special SIMMs and SCSI connectors. I have an idea, though: HEY APPLE, HOW ABOUT A 68040 UPGRADE BOARD FOR OWNERS OF SIX-SLOT MACS!!! If I had bought a IIcx, I could at least upgrade to a Quadra 700, but with the larger boxes, the IIfx is the end of the line. Also, I think people who have upgraded once to the IIx shouldn't have to spend the same amount as upgrading from a straight II. I know the comments about "you wouldn't expect to upgrade your car/washing machine/first-born child/etc..." Yes, but I don't keep forking over hundreds (if not thousands) of dollars in software updates/ETOs/etc. for my car/washing machine/first-born child/etc. It would be nice if my hardware could keep up with the demands of all this nice software (C++, MacApp, etc.) Apple keeps sending me. Just about any word processor file will do except Nissus. There's not too much out there other than FrameMaker that actually *reads* MIF and makes sense of it, probably because MIF reflects so much of the document's structure which is very Frame-specific. However, FrameMakers on different platforms *can* read each other's MIFs and retain formatting. This is MIF's main function in life. Other uses for MIF are for making global changes that can't be done easily or quickly in FM itself (like "change all my Levelx paragraph tags into xHeading tags where x is from 1 to 9"), creating mailable FM documents, etc. > And what does MIF stand for? > Macintosh Interchange Format - Ha. I hope that someone can shed light on what is going on. The problems occur when I am logged via modems to another computer. At some seemingly random time during the session, the communication between the two modems seems to stop. The Powerbook still functions fines. The communications software on the Powerbook does not freeze. I can type and select menu items. This happens with the internal apple modem and an external Prometheus 1200 baud modem. When I type a character, the external modem transmits characters, but does not receive any response. My process on the remote machine continues to exist until I exit the communications software. The process on the remote machine can not transmit to the Powerbook. At other times the communications software will start to repeatedly display about 6 characters. The only way to interrupt this behavior is to quit the communications software. This happens with power saver option off, the rest feature off, and the Powerbook plugged in. This has happened using Mac kermit 0.9(40), MacLayers 1.0, Terminal 2.2, and QVT 2.1. I use kermit and MacLayers on an fx (system 7.0 tuned up with 32-bit addressing on) with no such problems. The PowerBook is 3 weeks old. I am running system 7.0.1 with tune up version 1.0. This is the system as it was installed. The modems at the other end are used by many people and are fine. The external Prometheus modem works fine with the fx. Apple's technical support thought it might be the software or possible the logic board. Since the problem occurs using an external modem, the problem does not appear to be an Apple modem problem. Has anyone else had this problem or an idea of what is happening? Has anyone used the above communications software successfully on a Powerbook 170? Does anyone know of shareware communications software that works on Powerbook 170? For those interested, it was indeed a RYFM as many netfolk pointed out. Two steps are involved: 1. Set the file transfer filter (Customize/Filter/Edit/File Transfer Filter) to strip out ASCII 010. 2. Tell White Knight to actually use the filter (Customize/Options/ File Transfer and check the "use filter" box). I had neglected that second step. A minor but significant omission. I was also warned to turn off "use filter" on binary (as opposed to text or hqx) file transfers, lest a binary file get trashed because it just happens to have one or more bytes containing ASCII 010. Hmm. That could be more bother than editing out linefeeds from downloaded text files. Which got me to thinking. Yes, I know that sort of thing is dangerous. Thinking, that is. Anyway, is there such a thing as a drag-n-drop utility that does nothing but strip line feeds? If so, could some kind soul post it to the archives? If not, how hard would it be for one of you ace programmers to create? Al Bloom, Virginia Tech ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Jun 92 08:46:36 -0400 From: "Keith E Gatling" <kgatling@mailbox.syr.edu> Subject: White Knight Text Downloads (Q) Al Bloom writes about problems with text files downloaded from a VM/CMS mainframe having linefeeds after each carriage return, and wonders if thre is any way aside from doing the global search and replace gig to get rid of them. Well, if I understand the problem correctly, I have the same problem downloading from the UNIX system I'm on (and I've also downloaded text >From a CMS system). I'm assuming that this shows up in MS Word as the infamous "paragraph marker at the end of every line" problem. Now assuming I'm correct here, I'm not exactly sure that you really want White Knight or any other program to automatically strip these out for you, and here's why. Most of the text files I download have the paragraphs separated by a blank line. If you had your program automatically strip out all the paragraph markers, you'd have the world's longest run on paragraph in your document. What I do instead is to first change all incidences of double returns (or "return-space-return" on CMS) into some special sequence of characters like @2@ (my special code for "two returns go here"). After I've done this, THEN and only then, do I do a global replace of all returns with a space. Finally, I go through once more and change all @2@'s to a single return. And there are even ways to make macros of this, but I'm going to assume you know this already. Of course, it's time for my standard disclaimer...it's always possible that I don't really understand your problem at all, and that I'm confusing the carriage return/linefeed issue with something else. But as usual, I'm assuming that someone will correct me if I'm wrong. I like being corrected, I hate being ignorant and never knowing it. keg * Keith E Gatling kgatling@mailbox.syr.edu * ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 11 Jun 92 11:25:49 EDT From: Tom Coradeschi <tcora@pica.army.mil> Subject: White Knight Text Downloads (Q) Allan M.
